Understanding Para Rowing Classification
If you are rowing for fun, fitness, or taking part in inclusive events, official classification is not required.
If you want to race competitively at sanctioned events, you may need to complete a formal classification process with USRowing or your National Governing Body [NGB].
Why classification matters
Classification ensures fair and safe competition by grouping athletes with similar levels of physical ability. It also helps determine equipment requirements, race eligibility, and the pool of athletes you will compete with.
There are three main internationally recognized para rowing classification categories:
PR1: Arms and shoulders only
-
Rowers who have very limited or no use of their legs or trunk
-
Row using arms and shoulders only, in boats with fixed seats and back support
-
May include athletes with spinal cord injuries or neurological issues
PR2: Trunk and arms
-
Rowers who can use their trunk and arms but have limited or no use of their legs
-
Row in fixed seats with more movement than PR1
-
May include athletes with double leg amputations or certain types of cerebral palsy
PR3: Legs, trunk, and arms
-
Rows with legs, trunk and arms but has a physical limitation that decreases their ability to propel the boat
-
Row on a rolling seat, as seen in non-para boats
-
May include athletes with missing hand digits, club foot or amputations

Nutritional Support
PRF is proud to partner with Dr Jenkins, known to many as JJ, an outpatient clinical psychologist and trusted mental health advisor to our community. JJ provides keynote talks, meets with individual athletes, and helps guide our approach to mental performance.
Thanks to the generous support of our donors, PRF offers free access to three individual sessions with JJ for para rowers who need support. We are committed to removing barriers to mental health care by making it accessible, confidential, and directly relevant to rowers.

We also worked with JJ to create a library of short mental performance talks called Pro Tips, designed to help para athletes manage common challenges in both recreational and high performance rowing. These videos were developed as part of our Intensive Training series and are freely available to all.
Rowing is both a physical and mental discipline. The mind is a powerful tool, and we are here to help you train it.
If you are looking to set up a session with Dr. Jenkins, please reach out to us through our contact form below, and we can connect and talk you through the next steps:
